Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name is officially the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time worldwide.
The film, which has seen huge ticket sales not only in Japan but in countries like China and South Korea, has made over $281 million worldwide. That’s before the film has even been released in America.
The majority of Your Name’s box office has come from Japan, where it has earned almost $200 million (¥23 billion) and become the second highest-grossing domestically-produced film of all time. But the film has also earned over $82 million in China and $17 million in South Korea, as well as around $1 million in Thailand, France and Australia.
The previous record holder was Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away, which made $274 million worldwide. That film remains the highest-grossing ever in Japan.
Funimation announced Wednesday it would release Your Name in America both dubbed and subtitled April 7.
