Though Shunji Iwai is a relative newcomer to the world of anime, he’s one of Japan’s most beloved independent filmmakers. Now the auteur behind films like Love Letter, Swallowtail Butterfly and All About Lily Chou-Chou is bringing his classic short film Fireworks, Should We See It from the Side or the Bottom? to anime form.
The animated project based on the 1993 film will be animated at Shaft, and brings together Hitoshi Ohne (Bakuman) as screenwriter, Akiyuki Shinbo (Puella Magi Madoka Magica) as chief director, and Nobuyuki Takeuchi, best known for his key animation on films like Spirited Away and Ponyo, as director.
The film will star Suzu Hirose (The Boy and the Beast), Masaki Suda (Death Note: Light Up the New World) and Mamoru Miyano (Ajin).
The original Fireworks, which won Iwai the Director’s Guild’s New Directors Award, is a 49-minute film about a group of six-graders who visit a summer festival to settle a debate about whether fireworks look round or flat when viewed from various angles.
Iwai himself has directed one anime film, The Case of Hana and Alice, which was a prequel to his live-action film Hana and Alice.
The animated Fireworks, Should We See It from the Side or the Bottom? will be released in Japan August 18, 2017.
