Over the years we’ve heard plenty about Yukito Kishiro’s Battle Angel Alita manga being one of the dream projects of director James Cameron (Terminator, Aliens, Avatar). He’s busy with the Avatar sequels, though, so while he’s still on board to produce along with Jon Landau, the pair are currently in talks with Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, From Dusk Til Dawn) to direct.
Currently titled Alita: Battle Angel, the adaptation aims to tell the tale of the titular amnesiac cyborg, who a doctor discovers in a scrapyard and rebuilds. Alita only remembers her deadly battle training, and uses it to track down and take out criminals. According to the report Alita will “explore a young woman’s journey of self-discover and finding love.”
Cameron described his enthusiasm in regards to bringing Rodriguez aboard: “He’s very collaborative and we’re already like two kids building a go-kart, just having fun riffing creatively and technically. This project is near and dear to me, and there’s nobody I trust more than Robert, with his technical virtuosity and rebel style, to take over the directing reins. We’re looking forward to learning a lot from each other while we make a kick-ass epic.”
As for Rodriguez, he considers working from Cameron’s script to be a master class in filmmaking. “It’s an honor to explore the world of Alita along with Jim and Jon, whose films have impacted me for decades,” Rodriguez added.
Kishiro’s manga ran from 1990-1995, and the saga continued in Battle Angel Alita: Last Order from 2000-2014. An OVA adaptation, directed by Hiroshi Fukutomi, was produced in 1993.
