Way back in April we reported the first scant bits of information on a couple of short anime films in the works. Now both films are set to be released on a double bill in a few cities throughout Japan.
The first is called Hinata no Aoshigure (aka Sonny Boy and Dewdrop Girl), and it’s directed by independent animator Hiroyasu Ishida.
If there’s something familiar about the style of Ishida’s new short, it may be because you’re one of 2.6 million people who’ve viewed Ishida’s previous short, Fumiko’s Confession, on the YouTubes.
Ishida created Fumiko’s Confession while still in university, making the rest of us look like lazy jerks. He also directed the ten-minute short Rain Town as his final project.
The other film on the bill is called Shashinkan (The Portrait Studio). It’s directed by Takashi Nakamura, who unlike Ishida, has been around the world of professional anime for some time. He worked on Akira, Nausicaa, and directed a short in the famed film Robot Carnival, not to mention 2001’s A Tree of Palme.
These two shorts look quite different from each other, but share in common strong directors with a unique visual style, and that’s something we’re always happy to see.
