When we last reported on new anime streaming site Daisuki, details were hard to come by. We knew it was a concerted effort on the part of Japan’s major studios to gain a streaming foothold in the US, offering hits like One Piece and Madoka Magica independently of existing legal streaming services like Crunchyroll and Hulu.
Now, thanks to an interview with Daisuki’s Eri Maruyama, we know more of the essential details on how the service is going to operate.
First, the site will not have a paid subscription model, a very reassuring fact, particularly for subscribers of the recently shuttered JManga, which initially offered a very Japanese (and very confusing) subscription/points payment model for purchasing manga.
Second, Daisuki is not aiming to act in direct competition to existing legal streaming services; sites like Crunchyroll will not be forced to take down content. Or at least, that’s what it sounds like, with Maruyama saying that “other sites may continue their streaming services… streaming on DAISUKI.net has not to be exclusively limited to DAISUKI.net.”
