New Gundam AGE Project Confirmed

Having spawned from a passionately loved TV series that was nevertheless cancelled due to low ratings (the original Mobile Suit Gundam), the giant robot anime franchise has a tendency to keep its projects alive.

For example, Gundam AGE – the kid-targeted project spearheaded by Level-5’s Akihiro Hino – was met by its intended audience with indifference. In the core fan group, many older otaku were immediately turned off by character and mecha design that were clearly for the younger set. And most importantly for Bandai, absolutely nobody bought the toys, aside from some otaku who found that the limbs looked funny on their Madoka Magica figures. Commercially, at least, the gamble had failed.

Others might write off the project and walk away, but even as it moves on to other Gundam projects (such as, tellingly, a remake of the original series) Sunrise hasn’t buried AGE. Surprisingly, the show’s producer recently tweeted that a new project was in the works. Details are unknown aside from the existence of the project, and that it will feature protagonist Ansem and antagonist Zeheart from the show’s second generation. Anime? Manga? A series of illustrated plates at a novelty restaurant? Recurring subplot on a Gundam pachinko machine? We don’t know.

But it’s something, and fans of Gundam AGE should be pleased to hear that, at least.
