This Season’s Anime Reincarnations Are Already Pretty Intense

The spring season is just barely underway, but the new batch of anime reincarnations is pulling no punches.

Anime reincarnations are a relatively common thing in new series these days, be it to another world or back into one’s own. Lots of protagonists are getting second chances to pursue their dreams, pursue revenge, or just live a slow life. The spring 2024 season is no exception… and even though we’ve barely started, we can’t help but notice that these next-life adventures are already kind of intense.

From brutal deaths to slow-burn danger, this trio of new heroes has already been through a lot at the very beginning of their series. Fortunately, they’re also equipped with powers that can keep them safe… or utterly destroy any foes.

Allen – The Banished Former Hero Lives Life as He Pleases

The Banished Former Hero Lives as He Pleases

As far as anime reincarnations go, Allen’s was pretty tame. It’s what happens next that’s messy. The Banished Former Hero Lives Life as He Pleases, we meet reincarnated hero Allen. He died in battle and was brought back to life by a goddess. So far, so normal. It’s the sort of world he was brought back to that’s a problem. As long as he keeps his past-life powers under wraps, he can get kicked out of his family home and life his slow life as he wants.

However, there’s something sinister lurking. In this world, heroes—like Akira, this generation’s hero—have a target on their back. A shadowy organization is ready to take out anyone gifted by the gods to help others. Can Allen stay safe with his overpowered skills? And, more importantly, can he keep others safe?

Gobrou – Re:Monster

Re:Monster

If we could pick our anime reincarnations, “low-level goblin baby” would not be high on our list. But it’s worked out well for Gobrou, the star of Re:Monster. Like Allen, he’s equipped with past-life abilities; though in Gobrou’s case, they allow him to absorb the abilities of others. So chowing down on any monster he defeats leads him to evolve into newer, cooler monsters. But that’s not the brutal part.

Gobrou, formerly Tomokui Kanata, had a heck of a death in his past life. We’ll learn more as the series goes on, but we see his murder at the hands of a woman who had been stalking him. Let’s just say she was extremely enthusiastic about it. Fortunately, as Gobrou, he’s well away from her and into his new life.

Lloyd de Saloum – Reincarnated as the 7th Prince

I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability

Don’t let the innocent face fool you: Lloyd’s whole deal is one of the most brutal anime reincarnations we’ve seen in a while, both before and after. He starts I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince as a man who loves magic but lacks both the aptitude and the bloodline to excel at it. He’s made an example of by being roasted alive by a higher-level mage… both figuratively and literally. But as he’s being burned to death and insulted along the way, he’s enamored by the power of the magic consuming him.

Now he’s the seventh prince of the royal family—too young to succeed the throne, but more than able to wield magic. With his past life memories intact, he’s studying hard. And he’s terrifying. In the first episode alone, we see him battle and best an ancient demon. And smile the whole time.
