Hayao Miyazaki just won a Golden Globe for The Boy and the Heron, the first time an anime has received such an award. The next question many people are asking: can The Boy and the Heron, or another anime movie, take home an Oscar?
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced what movies are eligible for the 2024 Oscars, and there are some anime titles in the mix, as well as titles related to Japan. That said, it won’t be until January 23 that we learn what the official nominees are.
But according to The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, The Boy and the Heron, Godzilla Minus One, Gran Turismo, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Suzume, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and YOSHIKI Under the Sky are all technically possible nominees for Best Picture.
There are 33 movies that are eligible for the Animated Feature category, and several of them are anime or otherwise of interest to otaku: Blue Giant, The Boy and the Heron, The First Slam Dunk, Lonely Castle in the Mirror, and Suzume.
During most years, no anime make it to the final round and become nominated. For example, that was the case last year, though INU-OH, Drifting Home, and Goodbye, Don Glees! were all anime movies that had the chance of being nominated.
The Academy Awards will take place on March 10.
The Oscars’ official website does have a page for Miyazaki because of his previous Academy Award win, calling him “One of Japan’s most distinctive filmmakers.” He also got a Honorary Award at the Academy’s Governors Award in 2014. Do you think he or one of the other directors here have a chance of getting nominated, and maybe even an Academy Award in 2024?
