The live-action adaptations of Yasuhisa Hara’s Kingdom manga just keep coming. Now we know when the fifth (!!) film in the franchise is set to hit Japanese theaters: next summer.
It’s the followup to Kingdom 4: Return of the Great General, which came out in 2024 and made a bunch of money for all involved, including production company Credeus (Kokuho) and distributor Toho. In fact, it was the third-highest grossing film of 2024 in Japan, topped by only Conan and Haikyu!!.
Combined, the four films have made a total of 24.5 billion yen in Japan ($167 million as of today’s exchange rate).
Just like the four previous films, this one will be directed by Shinsuke Sato and star Kento Yamazaki as Xin.
Meanwhile, Hara’s original Kingdom manga continues, now in its 19th year and 75th volume. Earlier this year, Viz announced it would bringing the manga to the English-speaking world starting this November. Here’s how Viz describes it:
Offering readers a thrilling window into one of the most transformative periods in Chinese history, Kingdom is set during China’s Warring States period and follows Xin, a war orphan from the kingdom of Qin, who dreams of becoming a great general and uniting China. After his closest friend, Piao, dies under mysterious circumstances, Xin embarks on a journey to fulfill their shared dream. Along the way, he meets Ying Zheng, a young king bearing a striking resemblance to Piao, who seeks Xin’s help to reclaim his throne and change the course of history.
