As previously reported, the original script for Gundam Seed FREEDOM ZERO was apparently completed 20 years ago. Screenwriter Chiaki Morosawa and Shigeru Morita wrote the original scenario during the planning phase for Gundam SEED FREEDOM. According to director Mitsuo Fukuda—who was in attendance at a screening of FREEDOM with producer Hisakazu Naka and Kira Yamato voice Soichiro Hoshi—the project was originally planned as an OVA.
SEED FREEDOM shot to the top of the Japanese box office when it was released and eventually earned 4.86 billion yen. That makes it the best-earning Gundam film to date. It made its way to Netflix on September 1, 2024.
The film was directed by Gundam Seed director Mitsuo Fukuda at Bandai Namco Filmworks.
Here’s how Gundam.info describes the story:
Gundam SEED FREEDOM Plot
C.E. (Cosmic Era). An era in which there are human beings called Coordinators, born with superior physical and mental abilities thanks to genetic modification, and humans called Naturals who are born naturally. With their respective existence at stake, the ideological clash between Coordinators and Naturals escalated into war using armed force.
Along the way, the Destiny Plan was proposed, which would forcibly assign a role to each individual and create a world free of competition. But amid the fighting, this Destiny Plan was rejected in order to protect humanity’s aspirations and future freedom.
