All you folks who have been clamoring for a live-action Space Invaders movie—surely there are at least a couple of you—are in luck. New Line Cinema acquired the rights back in 2014, and now the studio is finally doing something with it as plans move forward for the project.
Created by Tomohiro Nishikado, Taito’s Space Invaders originally hit arcades way back in 1978. New Line may have missed the opportunity to cash in on the game’s 40th anniversary, but that hasn’t stopped them from tapping writer Greg Russo (Netflix’s Death Note 2, Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil reboots) to handle the screenplay. Akiva Goldman of Weed Road Pictures and Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures are producing the movie.
That’s about all there is as far as details are concerned. We’ll have to wait and see how this classic retro arcade game makes the leap to the big screen. It’s definitely easier to imagine than Battleship, at least, and that actually happened!
