The Leviathan anime dropped its first trailer in September 2024, and now it’s revealed that it will officially debut on Netflix on July 10. Orange, the anime studio taking care of the animation, shared this news along with this new visual:
It will not be available on any other streaming services.
Orange also worked with Qubic Pictures on the series, with Qubic producing the anime as a whole. Christophe Ferreira, who has worked on anime series like Eden, Bleach and Soul Eater, is helming the project as director. An original song for the show has been composed by Joe Hisaishi of Studio Ghibli fame. The anime’s soundtrack is being composed by Nobuko Toda and Kazuma Jinnouchi, both of whom previously worked on Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, RWBY: Ice Queendom and more. Production is also being handled by Justin Leach (Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence) and Taiki Sakurai (Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance).
Many anime series are based on manga or Japanese video games, but Leviathan is based on a Western novel trilogy by Scott Westerfield. Westerfield gave this description for the Leviathan novel series on his website:
Leviathan Plot
Prince Aleksander, would-be heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, is on the run. His own people have turned on him. His title is worthless. All he has is a battletorn war machine and a loyal crew of men.
Deryn Sharp is a commoner, disguised as a boy in the British Air Service. She’s a brilliant airman. But her secret is in constant danger of being discovered.
With World War I brewing, Alek and Deryn’s paths cross in the most unexpected ways, taking them on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure that will change both their lives forever.
Other anime series Orange has worked on include BEASTARS, Trigun Stampede, and Land of the Lustrous.
