Longtime collaborators actor Leonardo DiCaprio and director Martin Scorsese, who most recently teamed up for Killers of the Flower Moon, sat down for a chat about their favorite movies for the site Letterboxd—and some Ghibli films came up during the chat.
DiCaprio mentions that since Scorsese is a famous film fanatic, it’s usually the director recommending films to the actor and not the other way around. But DiCaprio did make an important contribution to Scorsese’s cinema-going: the actor recommended that Scorsese watch Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away. Princess Mononoke comes up in the chat as well.
The fact that Letterboxd used the Ghibli/Miyazaki exchange right up top in the teaser really shows the continued popularity and power of those films in the public imagination.
According to a 2022 article, Princess Mononoke is one of DiCaprio’s favorite seven films, alongside such classics as 8½ and Bicycle Thieves. Nice.
