December 4, 2008 Here’s your “really?” of the week, because I’m not talking about the animated King of Fighters movies. Gordan Chan—director of classic Hong Kong films like Fist of Legend and not-so-classic recent fare like 2003’s Jackie Chan flick The Medallion—will be directing the movie adaptation of SNK fighting series King of Fighters. Among the reported cast are Maggie Q and Mister Darth Maul himself, Ray Park.
Better yet, they’ve decided to add a sci-fi twist to the outing, perhaps guaranteeing some sort of last-second lab escape sequence like the grand exit of Dead or Alive. Honestly, staying true to whatever the original story of a fighting game may be isn’t really that big of a deal, unless you’re a true stickler for the reasons behind all the street thrashing and face bashing. As long as the action delivers, I’m not going to be down on this one. After all, it probably would have made for a solid Van Damme vehicle 15 years ago.
