Kiki’s Delivery Service Novel Marks 40th Anniversary with New Cover from SPY x FAMILY Creator

kiki's delivery service

Eiko Kadono’s classic Kiki’s Delivery Service novel first made its way to shelves and hearts in Japan on January 25, 1985. Now, in celebration of the novel’s 40th anniversary, a new cover has debuted featuring artwork by none other than SPY x FAMILY manga author Tatsuya Endo.

The cover will adorn the first volume in a six-volume set, which will be available for a limited time in Japan starting on February 3. You can see the set and full cover below.

Following the original’s 1985 release—which had a cover featuring the artwork of Akiko Hayashi—five sequels launched between 1993 and 2009. Beyond the novel itself, Kiki’s Delivery Service is best known as the source of the hit anime film adaptation by Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki, which opened in Japan in 1989 and went on to be one of the highest-grossing films of that year.

GKIDS releases the anime adaptation on Blu-ray and describes it like so:

Kiki’s Delivery Service Plot

It is a tradition for all young witches to leave their families on the night of a full moon and fly off into the wide world to learn their craft. When that night comes for Kiki, she embarks on her new journey with her sarcastic black cat, Jiji, landing the next morning in a seaside village, where her unique skills make her an instant sensation. Don’t miss this delightfully imaginative and timeless story of a young girl finding her way in the world, featuring the voices of Kirsten Dunst, Janeane Garofalo, Phil Hartman, and Debbie Reynolds.
