Kick-Heart Director to Helm Ping-Pong Anime

No secret around here at e-News HQ that we really, really like Masaaki Yuasa, director of The Tatami Galaxy and Kick-Heart. So it was with joy we learned this week that Yuasa has a new series premiering this spring.

Ping Pong The Animation
, set to premiere on Fuji TV’s famous late-night Noitamina anime block, is an adaptation of the manga by Taiyo Matsumoto (Tekkon Kinkreet) about two friends, Smile and Peco, who play on their high school’s ping-pong club.

Kevin Aymeric, who did the backgrounds for Kick-Heart, has been confirmed as the background director, and Tatsunoko Productions will be handling the animation.

For our money, Yuasa is the perfect director to turn Matsumoto’s sketchy, free-form drawings into animation. Not much else is known about the series at this time, but we’ll certainly be keeping an eye on it as the April premiere date approaches.

P.S. If your interest’s been piqued, Ping Pong was previously adapted into a live-action film in 2002. It’s pretty good!
