Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Light Novels Break Publisher’s Records

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? has turned into a massive franchise, and that never would have happened if it weren’t for the original light novels by Fujino Omori and Suzuhito Yasuda. The novels’ Japanese publisher, GA Bunko, has revealed that there are now 20 million copies of the light novels out in circulation. In fact, no other GA Bunko light novel series has done so well!

So this news had to be shared online, along with a special image (see above).

And there’s more novel goodness coming. This October will see the launch of the 21st book of the main series (in which we get to the concluding arc), the 16th volume of the spinoff Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side: Sword Oratoria, as well as the story Familia Chronicle episode Asfi.

The series inspired an anime adaptation that began in 2015. The fifth season just wrapped.

Yen Press is publishing the original light novels, their spinoffs, and their various manga adaptations. It gave this description for the plot of the first light novel:

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Plot

In Orario, fearless adventurers band together in search of fame and fortune within the monstrous underground labyrinth known as Dungeon. But while riches and renown are incentive enough for most, Bell Cranel, would-be hero extraordinaire, has bigger plans. He wants to pick up girls. Is it wrong to face the perils of Dungeon alone, in a single-member guild blessed by a failed goddess? Maybe. Is it wrong to dream of playing hero to hapless maidens in Dungeon? Maybe not. After one misguided adventure, Bell quickly discovers that anything can happen in the labyrinth–even chance encounters with beautiful women. The only problem? He’s the one who winds up the damsel in distress!
