In These Summer Anime Romances, Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction

These anime romances hit all the tropes.

Anime romances tend to follow a series of tropes—tropes many of us are very used to by now. But what if those fictional rules of play found their way into real life? Would it make things easier, or just more confusing? This season, a trio of young men are finding out. Because their school days have become the very anime, manga, and light novels they like best!

What happens when your 2D waifu appears in the real world? Or you get your very own harem? And what happens to that forgotten third corner of the classic love triangle? These new anime will show you!

Pseudo Harem

Pseudo Harem

It’s no secret that Pseudo Harem is one of our favorite anime romance—and one of our favorite anime—of the season. Rin Nanakura is the darling of her high school’s drama club, but she only has eyes for Eiji, her set-building senpai. When he remarks offhand what fun it would be to have a harem, she becomes one! But her excellent mimicry of tsunderes, spoiled brats, and flirty imps masks her true secret: she’s in love with Eiji.

Harem anime are a mainstay of the medium, and Pseudo Harem plays with those tropes. Eiji realizes how difficult managing a real harem would be. At the same time, Rin realizes that having a huge cheering section can really motivate a person. Now if only she knew how he felt about her…

MAKEINE: Too Many Losing Heroines!

MAKEINE: Too Many Losing Heroines!

Kazuhiko Nukumizu loves light novel and anime romances. But he has a special soft spot for the “losing heroines”: the girls who come in second in the game of love. Now, life is imitating art in MAKEINE: Too Many Losing Heroines as he meets three such girls at his school!

Anna convinced her crush to confess to his crush. Lemon lost her heart to a taken senpai. And Chika lost out to the childhood friend. What is life like for these ladies? And what’s going on between Nukumizu and Anna? See what happens after the rom-com ends and these brave losing heroines push forward!

2.5 Dimensional Seduction

2.5 Dimensional Seduction

In anime romances, you can fall for anyone—even a literal angel! Thanks to his favorite manga and anime, Okumura is pretty much spoiled for IRL girls. If he’s got Liliel, he doesn’t need 3D girls. But when he meets Ririsa, who has dedicated herself to making the perfect Liliel cosplay, the 2.5 Dimensional Seduction begins.

While the series delves more and more into the cosplay scene as it goes on, it always comes back to the growing relationship between Okumura and Ririsa. When he lets go of his insistence that no real girl could measure up to Liliel, will he see Ririsa’s charms? Could he potentially accept that someone else could share his tastes? Keep watching and find out!
