Hayao Miyazaki, Eiichiro Oda Make List Of Most Impactful Asians

Hayao Miyazaki, Director and Studio Ghibli Co-Founder, Turns 77

Gold House, which describes itself as “a cultural ecosystem that unites, invests in, and champions Asian Pacific leaders to power tomorrow for all” has released the names for its 2024 Most Impactful Asians A100 list. Included are some people definitely of interest to otaku.

Writer and director Hayao Miyazaki, who also recently made the Time 100 list, is among those being honored as most impactful. His latest movie, The Boy and the Heron, won an Academy Award, among many other awards.

There’s also some One Piece love going on! Not only was creator Eiichiro Oda spotlighted, but so were Mackenyu (who plays Zoro in the live-action Netflix adaptation) and Steven Maeda, who is executive producing the show. Gold House explained why Oda, out of many mangaka, was specifically called out: “With more than 523.2 million tankōbon copies in circulation worldwide, One Piece is both the best-selling manga in history and the best-selling comic series printed in volume, in turn making Oda one of the best-selling fiction authors.”

Takashi Yamazaki, who has seen great success as the director of Godzilla Minus One, is likewise being honored. And multiple actors from the live-action Godzilla show Monarch: Legacy of Monsters were named: Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, and Anna Sawai.

Shogun miniseries co-creator Rachel Kondo and actor Hiroyuki Sanada are on the list as well. Sanada also played Jiro in The Dagger of Kamui, Doson in Onmyoji, and Ryuji Takayama in Ring and Ring 2.

On May 11 in LA, there will be a Gold Gala event for everyone who made the list.

Gold House further explained on its website:

“Every May, the A100 honors the 100 most impactful Asian Pacific leaders in culture and society over the past year, as well as special honors for unique contributions. Celebrate the honorees through this special film, produced in partnership with Google. . .”
