The Gundam SEED series is getting ready to continue, this time with the announcement of a followup to Gundam SEED FREEDOM. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO is a prequel project, and according to the announcement, the original script was completed 20 years ago.
Screenwriter Chiaki Morosawa and Shigeru Morita wrote the original scenario during the planning phase for Gundam SEED FREEDOM. According to director Mitsuo Fukuda—who was in attendance at a screening of FREEDOM with producer Hisakazu Naka and Kira Yamato voice Soichiro Hoshi—the project was originally planned as an OVA.
As for how it will be presented now, that has yet to be decided.
SEED FREEDOM shot to the top of the Japanese box office when it was released and eventually earned 4.86 billion yen. That makes it the best-earning Gundam film to date. It made its way to Netflix on September 1, 2024.
The film was directed by Gundam Seed director Mitsuo Fukuda at Bandai Namco Filmworks.
Here’s how Gundam.info describes the story:
Gundam SEED FREEDOM Plot
C.E. (Cosmic Era). An era in which there are human beings called Coordinators, born with superior physical and mental abilities thanks to genetic modification, and humans called Naturals who are born naturally. With their respective existence at stake, the ideological clash between Coordinators and Naturals escalated into war using armed force.
Along the way, the Destiny Plan was proposed, which would forcibly assign a role to each individual and create a world free of competition. But amid the fighting, this Destiny Plan was rejected in order to protect humanity’s aspirations and future freedom.
