Mike McFarland, a prolific anime voice actor and director, recently had emergency surgery after a tumor was discovered in his brain. Thankfully, the surgery did what it needed to do. Now McFarland is going to need time and aid to recover, so anime voice actors J. Michael Tatum and Brandon McInnis started a GoFundMe page.
The GoFundMe page explains, “Proceeds will go toward hiring a live-in medical assistant for as long as necessary to help get this legend back on his feet.”
They originally set the goal at $65,000. When that goal was smashed, they raised the number. As of this writing, 986 people have donated a total of $83,403, and the hope is to reach $100,000.
In terms of directing credits, McFarland has helmed the English versions of episodes and movies for the following series: Attack on Titan, Dragon Ball Z, Fullmetal Alchemist, Hell’s Paradise, My Hero Academia: You’re Next, Tokyo Ghoul and Trinity Blood, to name only a few examples.
In terms of acting, some of his roles are Jean Kirstein in Attack on Titan, Master Roshi and Yajirobe in Dragon Ball, Ritsu Soma in Fruits Basket, Kotaro Amon in Tokyo Ghoul and Otabek Altin in Yuri!!! on Ice. Once again, this is only listing a few examples of his many credits.
He has also taken on jobs of script adaptation, line producing, and assistant directing.
Tatum and McInnis additionally shared their appreciation for MacFarland as a person, writing, “Those who know him best count Mike among the sweetest, funniest, most compassionate humans on the planet; always quick to lend a hand, give sage advice, advocate for the underdog or share in an adventure.”
If you want to donate, you can go to the GoFundMe page here.
Wishing the best to McFarland in his recovery, and hopefully he’ll be doing a lot better soon!
