The original anime short movie Garden of Remembrance from Naoko Yamada and Science SARU will begin streaming in Japan on August 30. A trailer was released to announce the news.
The general public got its first peek at the movie in 2022 at Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Later the full movie was shown at Scotland Loves Anime and Annecy. Fans at this year’s Anime Expo in Los Angeles were able to get a screening thanks to GKIDS, the company that licensed it.
Credit for character design goes to Etsuko Mizusawa, known for Hello, this is Terumi. Garden of Remembrance’s music was composed by Lovely Summer-chan.
Before being at Science SARU, Yamada was known for her work at Kyoto Animation. She made the switch to Science SARU in 2021 and directed The Heike Story.
Garden of Remembrance marks her second job as a director at Science SARU. Yamada isn’t taking a rest, though. She’s already also worked on the movie The Colors Within (a.k.a. Kimi no Iro in Japanese). The Colors Within is set to hit theaters in Japan on August 30, the same day Garden of Remembrance starts streaming.
Garden of Remembrance is not based on a manga, novel or video game, but a description of it has been shared:
Garden of Remembrance Plot
Beer cans and a whisky glass are placed in an open space on the floor. Though a bit disorganized, ”Your” room is filled with art supplies and an electric guitar lining the perimeter of the room. The alarm on a phone goes off, and “You” leisurely wake up to start your day.
The anemone flower that “I” liked. A precious flower that holds memories which tie “You” and “I” together. After opening your bedroom closet one day, “You” become engrossed in your memories of “Me.” A story that represents “Me,” “You,” our “Childhood Friend,” and our goodbyes.
