Earthbound tribute concert streamed

Few video games inspire the kind of rabid adoration as the Super Nintendo cult classic Earthbound. Known as Mother 2 in Japan, the now 18-year-old game turned RPGs on their heads, starring, instead of knights and princesses battling dragons, young baseball bat-toting kids making their way through a bizarre and hilarious version of middle America.

The creator of the Mother series, Shigesato Itoi, is a man of many talents, best known in  Japan for his career as a copywriter who wrote some of the most memorable ad campaigns of the 80s. He also provided the voice of the father in My Neighbor Totoro, and runs website called Almost Daily Itoi News, which recently hosted a mini-concert celebrating the music of Mother 2.

The concert was a collaboration between the game’s original composers, Keiichi Suzuki  (Tokyo Godfathers) and Hirokazu “Hip” Tanaka, and two popular video game music remixers, Prof. Sakamoto and Hyadain. The soundtrack was one of the best elements of Earthbound, and the concert, a real treat for fans of the game, was archived and can be viewed on Youtube. Enjoy!
