When Dragon Ball Daima was first announced at New York Comic-Con in 2023, we were told that original Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama was “deeply involved beyond his usual capacity.” At this year’s New York Comic-Con, which is currently going on, Dragon Ball series executive producer Akio Iyoku shared some of how Toriyama was involved.

Iyoku noted that with Dragon Ball Daima, “The Demon Realm [was done by] Toriyama. He didn’t just do the background; he took a lot of the settings and put them on paper.” According to the producer, Toriyama created the Demon Realm from the ground up.

Glorio’s spacecraft is another Toriyama design. Iyoku explained, “Toriyama-sensei, he was very particular when it came to mechs. He actually thought about how they would function, how they’d move. We got small mechs like this, all the way to really large ones that are all going to show up in the show.”

Iyoku continued, “We certainly paid a lot of attention to the visual expression that you see in Dragon Ball Daima. So I hope you get to experience a different side or angle of Dragon Ball that we never see before.”

Dragon Ball Daima recently debuted and is streaming on both Hulu and Crunchyroll. Toei Animation and Fathom Events are set to offer the first three dubbed episodes in movie form for a brief theatrical stint in American theaters. It will be on the big screen from November 10-12.

All of this is happening just months after Toriyama’s unexpected death.

Crunchyroll gave this description for the anime, which is not based on stuff in the manga:

Dragon Ball Daima Plot

Dragon Ball DAIMA: Due to a conspiracy, Goku and his friends are turned small. What sort of adventure awaits Goku, Supreme Kai, and the new characters Glorio and Panzy in this unknown world, the “Demon Realm”?
