Dealing with Mikadono Sisters Is a Breeze is the latest close-quarters rom-com this anime season. But it’s more than an odd couple situation… our hero Yu is sharing living space with three highly accomplished young ladies! You can watch the anime as it airs and see what happens. And now, you can keep up in manga form, too!
Join us as we peruse the first two volumes, now available from Viz. The title has also joined the publisher’s simulpub library, meaning you can read new chapters as they drop in Japan! But first, let’s catch up to those early chapters.
Talent vs. No Talent

Yu Ayase is the hero of Dealing with Mikadono Sisters Is a Breeze: the son of a celebrated late actress. But all he’s inherited from her is her good looks. Beyond that, he’s average at best at everything. In the wake of her passing, Yu receives an invitation to live with the Mikadono family. What he doesn’t realize is that he’ll be spending most of his time with the three daughters of the house. And those girls also happen to be star students at the school to which Yu has just transferred!
Now he has to win over princely actress Kazuki, tomboyish martial artist Niko, and genius shoji gremlin Miwa. And he’s determined to, since his mother’s last wish was for him to have a real family. But how can you break the seal on a family overcommitted to perfection?
Home Cooking and Memories

While Dealing with Mikadono Sisters Is a Breeze absolutely has the setup for a slapstick harem series, the early chapters are surprisingly wholesome. Yu isn’t here to court the girls. He just wants to do his part to help them succeed. (Although he does have an ulterior motive of helping them build stronger family bonds.) In the first two volumes, his attempts include home-cooked meals tailored to each girl’s nutritional needs, a festival outing, and a girls’ night out. Of course, everything he tries ends up not quite as planned. But the intent eventually gets through.
The harder he tries, though, the more he realizes why these three are the way they are. And that’s where things really get interesting. The Mikadono family will not suffer mediocrity. And Yu is as mediocre as they come, at least in ways that matter to the Mikadonos. But as he continues to pour his heart out, the girls all start to warm to him.
A Family?

So, what exactly makes the “family” that Yu is trying to create for the Mikadono sisters? In his case, his touchstone is a role his mother played in a TV show. A recurring image of a family sharing a meal shapes his view of a true family, and it’s clearly what he’s aiming for. Granted, he does pause to consider that perhaps his goals are pulling the girls away from their own goals. But is that really true?
Meanwhile, the girls all appear to be catching feelings for the transfer student. And it’s not surprising. He’s effortlessly kind, he’s open to letting them make choices for themselves, and he listens when they want to be heard. So who will he end up with? Will he end up with any of them? The manga is still going strong, so it’s anyone’s guess!
