CNN did a short video on how anime has become a global craze, and it interviewed Yuichiro Hayashi, director of the final season of Attack on Titan, about why that is. The video also showed off fandom in Abu Dhabi as an example of anime’s far reach into different cultures.
“The theme of Attack on Titan itself is very much about ethnic issues, and it deals with universal themes that people from any country can relate to,” he said.
Talking about fans, he noted, “You can feel the passion of the local fans directly.” And speaking about the fandom going on in Abu Dhabi, he remarked, “I think there have been more and more events like this overseas recently, and I think they are very important.”
So, in other words, Hayashi ultimately said that anime like Attack on Titan have universal themes, and this is why they’re popular. Why do you think anime is getting popular around the globe?
Hayashi is also behind Attack on Titan The Movie: THE LAST ATTACK, which will hit Japanese theaters on November 8.
