Japan has been canceling a bunch of events in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus, and the latest to be shut down is one of the biggest anime events of the year, AnimeJapan 2020. The AnimeJapan Executive Committee officially announced the cancelation of the event, which was originally scheduled to be held March 21-24.
Here’s the official English statement:
AnimeJapan is usually host to a bunch of major announcements, so we’ll have to wait and see how they plan to go ahead with all the updates that were in store. All tickets will be refunded, so those who planned to attend can check the official website on March 6 for further details.
Advanced countermeasures are currently being put in place as a result of coronavirus. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced some of them on February 26, saying, “This is a very important time to end the outbreak of infection early … Considering the risk of transmission at nationwide sports and cultural events, for the next two weeks we request measures such as suspension, postponement or reduction in size.”
