The Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch – What’s It About?

Spica concentrates

Fantasy high school manga The Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch is on its way to becoming an anime! A tiny teaser shows a little of what’s to come for Spica and Claude, the two protagonists. But what’s it really about?

If you want to dive fully into the series, you can start reading the original manga now via K MANGA. But if you’re just curious what’s in store, read on! Who is Spica? What is Pandora’s Box? And what’s the weird condition that must be met to break Claude Sirius’s curse? We’ll answer those questions and more!

A Curse and a Kiss

Claude Sirius

At its most basic, The Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch is about Claude and Spica. Spica is a young aspiring witch. She has a lot of heart, but not a lot of ability. Fortunately, she meets Claude: an accomplished magic user under a feline curse. Claude also happens to be Spica’s big inspiration for pursuing magic. Now, he can help her achieve her dreams… though he has an ulterior motive.

You see, only a trained magic user who possessed Rebirth Magic can break his curse permanently. Spica happens to have that rare ability, but she’s woefully underpowered. So helping her achieve her dreams of attending magic school will benefit him. For now, she can break his curse temporarily every morning with a kiss. But… uh… the kiss isn’t… where you think. We’ll just leave it at that.

Astrological Magic

Spica flies?

The magic system of The Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch is rooted in the twelve astrological signs. A magic user’s ability relates directly to the sign under which they were born. For Spica, as a Virgo, she has plant magic. Learning to hone this magic in particular, and combine it with the magical talents of others’, will produce impressive effects.

When Spica enters the academy with Claude as her teacher, she’ll get to meet fellow students with different proficiencies. From the poison magic of Scorpio to the strength-and-size alterations of Taurus, each student has something that makes them special. But, at least in Spica’s class, each student also has something that makes them weird.

Pandora’s Box

Spica hurts

The Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch takes place mostly at the Royal Diana Academy, specifically in Claude’s “coven.” (A coven is a classroom of 12 students led by a teacher.) Claude, who’s working through more than his curse, has been entrusted with a dozen of the school’s messiest new students—Spica included. Dubbed “Pandora’s Box” by the rest of the faculty, these dozen magic users are a handful. And if Claude wants to get back in the school’s good graces, he has to help them all… not just the student who can break his curse.

Will Spica become a great magic user? Will Claude ever be free of his curse? Can the students of Pandora’s Box actually graduate? Start reading now to find out more, or watch the anime when it kicks off next year!

The Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch premieres in 2026.
