Another day, another pointless Pokémon crime. This time around someone broke into 1st Edition Collectibles in New Bedford, Massachusetts, approximately 60 miles away from Boston. It was about 2:30 AM on Tuesday. The thief, who then disappeared into the night, knew to take high-value collectible items. As a result, the owners say that more than $113,000 worth of Pokémon cards were filched.
Police are currently investigating. Cameras caught the crime, but not much has been made public about the footage. This is being done as a way of helping police in their probe.
Sean Vieira, the co-owner of 1st Edition Collectibles, said, “It sucks” about what happened. Speaking to NBC News, Vieira also pointed to the bright side, which was that no one died in the crime. “I mean, it’s just money.” (And, unfortunately, Pokémon crime has involved death.)
Sometimes people steal Pokémon cards because they’re hard to trace. However, in this case, Vieira explained, “It’s definitely one of those things that I would say that’s (the stolen merchandise) pretty easily identifiable for sure. The cards have serial numbers, and no boxes are the same. So there are imperfections in the boxes that we could probably use to identify, you know, the exact one. Again, it’s not a lot of them out there.”
If you have any information on the crime, please contact authorities or the store.
In recent months, thieves with hammers stole Pokémon cards from two Michigan stores; a man selling a $5,000 Pokémon card was beaten up and had the card stolen; and people got into a brawl at Costco over the cards. Just days ago there was a stabbing over the cards.
There is also sad news in the Pokémon world in general, as this week we learned about the passing of James Carter Cathcart, a voice actor for the franchise’s anime. He played Professor Oak, James and Meowth, meaning he was part of many people’s childhoods.
