Ghibli Park is getting a new exhibit, and this one is quite personal to Studio Ghibli’s Hayao Miyazaki: it’s the Citroën 2CV car he’s used for most of his adult life.
Miyazaki got the car decades ago as a way to get his baby from home to nursery school and vice versa. He’d never gotten a car before. The car came to be closely associated with him, and he helped that happen by, for example, including the model in his movie Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro. His son Goro paid homage to the vehicle in Earwig and the Witch, giving that Citroën 2CV a license plate that reads MYZ as a reference to the family’s surname.
Miyazaki is now an octogenarian, and he decided to no longer drive. But he didn’t want his vehicle to just go away. He got the idea in his head that it would be a fun fixture at Ghibli Park, and Goro is making that happen. The car will begin its exhibit there tomorrow, January 29.
Miyazaki’s most recent movie, The Boy and the Heron, has won multiple awards, including an Academy Award. GKIDS licensed the movie and gave this description for it:
