Disney has made it clear it wants to get more into the world of anime, like with its Star Wars: Visions work. But fans online noticed something that Anime News Network was then able to substantiate: Disney is censoring the streaming of Macross Dynamite 7.
The anime can still be seen fully at Amazon Prime Japan and Bandai Channel in Japan, but it’s a different story with Disney + and Hulu, both around the globe and in America.
The cut footage in question involves a teen character named Mylene Flare Jenius who is first drugged and then sexually assaulted. It’s a subplot in the anime. Altogether, it means several minutes of the anime went missing in two episodes.
Neither Disney nor Hulu have made public statements about the changes they made. Some other examples of Disney + cutting content includes removing a flirting scene in Toy Story 2, and pulling an episode of The Simpsons in Hong Kong for mentioning Tiananmen Square.
An online user on Reddit who noticed the change in Macross Dynamite 7 wrote, “Disney has removed the entire Mylene subplot with the producer out of the show. I know opinions on this are going to be mixed, this isn’t exactly people’s most beloved moment from the series or anything, but regardless of your thoughts on the ‘tastefulness’ of it, I think it’s a bad precedent to set. I also think it’s especially hypocritical when you compare it to some live-action stuff that’s available on these western streaming services.”
Last year, Disney’s executive overseeing anime said in an interview with Mantan web, “The fundamental storytelling and precision of action in anime have not changed, but there may be a shift toward adopting more universally acceptable expressions. It’s important that content is accessible and does not offend or mislead viewers, especially as we distribute to a larger market.”
What do you think about these changes to Macross Dynamite 7?
