Tokyo’s Square Enix Cafe to Shutter on March 31

Tokyo’s Square Enix Cafe to Shutter on March 31Game over. The Square Enix Cafe in Akihabara, Tokyo is set to close for good on March 31 after eight years in operation.

The cafe was home to all things Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and more in the heart of Tokyo’s otaku mecca since it opened in October 2016. It’s currently celebrating the release of the recent Dragon Quest III remake. That theme ends on January 31. We imagine the final makeover will be some kind of retrospective, but we’ll find out for sure next week.

The good news for RPG fans visiting Tokyo is that Square Enix’s other physical spaces remain open for now. That includes the shop and cafe Artina in Shinjuku and the shop Square Enix Garden in Shibuya.

The Square Enix cafe in Osaka suffered a similar fate in 2021.
