Shohei Hino, a Japanese actor who appeared in films and on TV for many decades, has died at the age of 75. The actor had suffered a lumbar fracture this summer.
Hino may be best known to anime fans as the voice of Great Uncle in Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, which was released in 2023. His most recent film was the live-action hit Last Mile, which was released in theaters in Japan this August.
Born as Koichi Nihei in 1949, Shohei Hino was known by jidaigeki fans for his role as Shouhachi in the 1977 series Shin Hissatsu Shiokinin. On the big screen, he collaborated with directors such as Shohei Imamura (Vengeance is Mine, Eijanaika), Kinji Fukasaku (Crest of Betrayal) and Mipo O (The Light Shines Only There). In 2012, he played Hideki Tojo in Emperor alongside Tommy Lee Jones and Matthew Fox.
Hino was also known as a musician and for hosting a NHK program called Kokoro Tabi (Heart’s Journey) in which he traveled Japan by bicycle.
