Creator Says Why Demon Lord, Retry! R Has New Actors

Demon Lord, Retry! R, the sequel anime to Demon Lord, Retry!, began on October 5, and anyone watching the Japanese version was sure to notice that nearly all of the voice actors had been recast.

Kenjirō Tsuda is back as Hakuto Kunai, but every other character has a new actor. Fans wanted to know why, so they asked original author Kurone Kanzaki. Kanzaki explained on X (Twitter) that it all really came down to scheduling. According to Kanzaki, the original cast is “quite popular,” and hence they have plenty of work to do, and they were already booked way out with work.

Because of all this, production chose to start anew with auditioning actors. Kanzaki really wanted to at least keep Tsuda as the main character, and won out after emphatically pressing the production team to keep him on. So that’s why Tsuda remains and not the others.

With the new cast, Momo Asakura plays Aku, Azumi Waki plays Akane Fujisaki, Iori Noguchi plays Eagle, Aina Suzuki plays Luna Elegant, Wataru Komada plays Isami Tahara, Minori Suzuki plays Mink, Mirai Tachibana plays Organ, and Kentarō Kumagai plays Zero Kirisame.

Kanzaki then went on to make a joke about the new Ranma ½ anime. That anime has managed to get back the same voice cast it had in the 80s, but it was impossible to get actors to reprise their roles for the much more recent Demon Lord, Retry!, which came out in 2019. So why was this? Kanzaki joked that, unlike Ranma ½, Demon Lord, Retry! R “doesn’t have that kind of capital.”

J-Novel Club publishes Demon Lord, Retry! R and gave this description for its story:

Demon Lord, Retry! R Plot

The Demon Lord continues his adventure in this re-vamped series! After encountering the mysterious entity in the lowest level of the Bastille Dungeon, he sets out for Hellion Territory, where Grand Devils vie for domination of the realm. With the addition of a new advisor—the (seemingly) hopeless optimist Akane—the Demon Lord’s army grows even more colorful, and their hijinks even wackier.
