August 26 is the birthday of The Rose of Versailles character André Grandier, and to celebrate, four new stills from the upcoming anime film have been revealed.
The stills show André at various points in his life as he as he struggles to survive in France during the Revolution. The childhood friend of Oscar François de Jarjayes, André is set to feature heavily in the upcoming film, in which he’s played by Toshiyuki Toyonaga.
The film is set for 2025, and is being animated at MAPPA.
The original manga by Riyoko Ikeda ran from 1972 to 1973, then returned from 2013 to 2018. The original 40-episode anime adaptation ran from 1979 to 1980.

Oscar François de Jarjayes, raised as the “son” and heir of a general’s family, masquerades as a beautiful woman in men’s clothing. Marie Antoinette arriving from neighboring Austria as a bride to become a noble and graceful queen.. Oscar’s servant and childhood friend, the commoner André Grandier. Hans Axel von Fersen, a handsome and intelligent count from Sweden. They meet in Versailles, France in the prosperous late 18th Century and live their respective destinies beautifully while being tossed about by the tides of times.
