Orb: On the Movements of the Earth, the anime based on the manga by Uoto, is on the way this October. Now we’ve got some news on who’s performing the opening theme song: the band Sakanaction.
This will be the first TV anime theme for Sakanaction. The band, who’ve been together since 2005, contributed “Shintakarajima” (“New Treasure Island”) to the live-action adaptation of the manga Bakuman.
Sakanaction vocalist and guitarist Ichiro Yamaguchi gave the following comment regarding working on the theme for Orb:
I focused on making the song abstract and persuasive rather than easy to understand and specific to the theme of the original work. I’m very happy to have been given this opportunity after a two-year hiatus in making music, and it’s a great honor for the band to be involved in this wonderful series.
Orb: On the Movements of the Earth is being animated at Madhouse, and stars:
- Maaya Sakamoto (Echidna in Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World) as Rafal
- Kenjiro Tsuda (Overhaul in My Hero Academia) as Nowak
- Sho Hayami (Ferdinand in Ascendance of a Bookworm) as Hubert
The original Orb: On the Movements of the Earth manga ran in Shogakukan’s Weekly Big Comic Spirits magazine from September 2020 to April 2022, ultimately being collected in eight volumes. Seven Seas Entertainment publishes the manga in English and describes the story like so:
In fifteenth-century Europe, heretics are being burned at the stake. Rafal, a brilliant young man, is expected to enter university at an early age and study the era’s most important field, theology. But Rafal values Reason above all else, which leads him both to the shocking conclusion that the Earth orbits the Sun, and into the hands of the Inquisition!
A decade later, two members of the Watch Guild, the dour young Oczy and the cynical Gras, find a hidden stone chest that details the secrets of the universe Rafal left behind. Dare they try to change their own stars by selling the heretical texts, or would that only lead to the stake and the fire?
