The nominees for the 2024 Academy Awards have been announced, and there is one anime nominated! It’s none other than The Boy and the Heron from Hayao Miyazaki, the only anime director who has ever won an Oscar.
To be specific, The Boy and the Heron is nominated in the Animated Feature Film category, and it will compete against Elemental, Nimona, Robot Dreams, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Godzilla Minus One also netted a nomination in the Visual Effects category.
Most years go by without any anime being nominated. Do you think The Boy and the Heron has a chance of winning? We’ll know one way or the other on March 10, when the Oscars are scheduled to occur.

After losing his mother during the war, young Mahito moves to his family’s estate in the countryside. The Boy and the Heron is the new critically-acclaimed fantasy adventure from the legendary Studio Ghibli, creators of Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and My Neighbor Totoro. Hayao Miyazaki’s first feature film in 10 years is a hand-drawn, original story written and directed by the Academy Award® -winning director. Produced by Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki, the film features a musical score from Miyazaki’s long-time collaborator Joe Hisaishi. The theme song for the film “Spinning Globe” was penned and performed by global J-pop superstar Kenshi Yonezu.
