Fans are still mourning the passing of manga legend Leiji Matsumoto, the creator of, among many other classic properties, Galaxy Express 999. Now Toei Animation has announced that it’s setting out to create a new Galaxy Express 999 music video.
Or, rather, it’s recruiting creatives to do it. The studio is collecting applications to create the video starting today, June 16 until July 31. Creatives do not need any experience in filmmaking, though they must reside in Japan and be able to communicate in Japanese.
Says Toei:
This project was planned as part of an effort to support the future of creators, and to connect Galaxy Express 999 to future generations. The video created will be presented at an event scheduled to be held this winter with the cooperation of DeNA. The music to be used in the music video will be announced soon.
Leiji Matsumoto’s original GE999 manga ran from 1977 to 1981 and spawned multiple anime adaptations. Here’s how Discotek describes the 1979 film by Rintaro:
Galaxy Express 999 is the name of a train which travels through space, beginning at Megalopolis Station on one end of the galaxy and ending at Andromeda on the other. But the Galaxy Express is more than just a train, it’s also a metaphor for life itself, with passengers constantly boarding, debarking, and dreaming along the way. Tetsuro Hoshino is a youth who’ll give anything to board the Three-Nine,including a promise to accompany a mysterious woman named Maetel all the way to Andromeda, the planet where, she tells him, he can get a free machine body to avenge the cruel death of his mother.
