Artist Behind Chibi Maruko-chan Drug Addict Doujinshi Apologizes

Doujinshi artist and YouTuber Gachi Muchi Pants recently shared a fan-made Chibi Maruko-chan manga in which an adult Maruko has become a drug addict. This ended up garnering divisive reactions, of course, considering it’s based on a children’s manga and anime, and the backlash eventually led to the artist apologizing for its “excessiveness” and removing the tweets.

Gachi Muchi Pants said he received a warning from the “official side” for the content, but not everyone agrees with its removal. Some said the backlash was only natural considering the content, and others said they found the idea entertaining. In the story, Maruko’s classmate is the one responsible for selling her drugs, and needless to say nothing like this ever happened in creator Momoko Sakura’s beloved series.

The original Chibi Maruko-chan manga ran in the pages of Shueisha’s Ribon magazine from 1986 to 1996, and the first anime adaptation ran from 1990 to 1992. Sakura passed away in 2018, but the second anime has been keeping the series on air since 1995—it hit 1500 episodes in 2022!—along with new chapters of the manga by Sakura Production, which includes long-time assistants of the late author.
