Momoko Sakura’s Chibi Maruko-chan manga inspired a TV anime that first aired for 142 episodes from 1990-1992, and then went on to inspire a new series that has been running steadily since January 1995. Sakura Production and Nippon Animation’s series is about to hit a huge milestone, because it will officially hit 1500 episodes this May.
The long-running series will celebrate with a special 1-hour broadcast when the 1500th episode airs on May 1 on Fuji TV from 6:00pm to 7:00pm Japan Time. In addition to the episode’s two stories, the special will highlight the show’s history with nostalgic images.
The original Chibi Maruko-chan ran in Shueisha’s Ribon shojo manga magazine from 1986 to 2018. Author Momoko Sakura passed away in 2018 at the age of 53.
