Just as Evangelion fans in Japan were finally about to be able to check out the long-awaited and delayed fourth film, Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time, Japan’s State of Emergency went into effect. While the movie is still slated to open wide in Japan on January 23, the planned midnight screenings have been canceled to limit the spread of COVID-19 and abide by the limitations put in place by the new State of Emergency.

The State of Emergency currently covers the Greater Tokyo Area, and includes restrictions placed on entertainment establishments like movie theaters, which must close at 8:00pm.

In addition to apologizing to fans who were excited to see the film as early as possible, the official Evangelion website passed along their “deepest sympathies to all the victims of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19)” and their “gratitude and respect to the healthcare professionals.”
