Director Makoto Shinkai has seen a ton of success with his latest anime film your name., which continues to make history among the top-grossing films of all time in Japan. Is there such thing as too much success, though? Shinkai seems to think so, as he told AFP that the feature’s success is beginning to trouble him.
Shinkai said, “It’s not healthy. I don’t think any more people should see it.” As for its potential as an Oscar-winner, he added, “I really hope it doesn’t win.”
All of Shinkai’s success has led to many dubbing him the ‘new Miyazaki,’ which is a popular thing to do for some reason. It’s almost as if people are only interested in dethroning old icons instead of creating brand new ones. This also seems to make Shinkai uncomfortable.
On Miyazaki comparisons: “Of course I’m happy when people mention his name and mine in the same breath. It’s like a dream. But I know they are overpraising ‘Your Name’ because I am absolutely not at Miyazaki’s level.
“Honestly, I really don’t want Miyazaki to see it because he will see all its flaws.”
Knowing Miyazaki, he’s probably right about that. For more insight into Shinkai’s current state of mind, be sure to read the full article on The Daily Mail.
