Akira on Blu-ray, Destination: February

Back when I bought that initial DVD tin of Katsuhiro Otomo’s gateway classic, Akira, I looked hard at the case in both admiration and full awareness that this wouldn’t be the last time I’d be buying it. Truth be told, I ended up buying the single-disc, too, because someone scratched the discs in my tin, but I guess the third disc is the charm, because Bandai Visual has now announced a Blu-ray release of the film.

Resistance will indeed be futile in just a few months, as reports indicate that the Blu-ray will see release on February 20th in Japan, and February 24th in America. Unlike some of their other releases, Akira will remain bilingual, with the Japanese track in both Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and linear PCM Dolby Surround, and the English soundtrack in 5.1. Special features will include a booklet, a video storyboard collection and the teasers and trailers one should expect from the release.
