3rd Live-Action Kingdom Film Tops Japan’s Box Office for 3rd Week

The numbers are in for the latest box office weekend in Japan, and for the third week in a row the third live-action Kingdom film came out on top. Based on the manga by Yasuhisa Hara, Kingdom: Unmei no Honoo opened in Japan on July 28, and the latest weekend of success brings its total to 3.282 billion yen, which adds up to about US$22.55 million to the tune of 2.272 million admissions.

Meanwhile, Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron anime film made 444 million yen in its fifth weekend, moving up from fourth place to third from last weekend. It’s now sitting at 6.235 billion yen (about US$42.87 million) on the back of 4.125 million admissions, making it the second highest-grossing anime film of the year behind Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine.

The new live-action Kingdom film adapts the Battle of Bayou and Escape from Zhao arcs. All seven of the main cast members—including Kento Yamazaki (Li Xin), Ryo Yoshizawa (Ying Zheng), Kanna Hashimoto (He Liao Diao), Nana Seino (Qiang Lei), Hiroshi Tamaki (Changwen Jun), Koichi Sato (Lü Buwei) and Takao Osawa (Wang Qi )—return for the latest outing. Shinsuke Sato is also back in the director’s chair with Tsutomu Kuroiwa returning to pen the script.
