urusei yatsura

It’s been a long and fun road for the Urusei Yatsura reboot, which just ended its 46-episode run in Japan. To mark the occasion, the official website and social accounts shared one last visual to thank fans for watching.

The anime’s main voice cast members, Hiroshi Kamiya (Ataru) and Sumire Uesaka (Lum), shared comments.

Hiroshi Kamiya:

I looked it up and found that the audition was in January 2021. At the time, I thought it would be a long road to the final episode, but I didn’t realize that the final episode would finally be on the air! It all happened so fast. I guess that’s how fulfilling it was for me to spend my time! I was happy to be involved in ‘Urusei Yatsura’ that I loved! I would like to thank everyone who was involved in this series! And thank you so much, Ataru! I had a great time!

Sumire Uesaka:

I am really, really glad to have been able to play Lum-chan for 4 cour! I am happy! Although I am sad to see the final episode coming, I am once again honored to have played my favorite Lum-chan until “Boy Meets Girl.” Since my college days when I became obsessed with “Urusei Yatsura,” which I learned about through reruns of the anime, and collected original comics and other goods, and met many favorite characters, my love for Lum-chan has not changed. She is cute, single-minded, jealous, a little mysterious, and the strongest of all. I never thought that the day would come when I would be able to stand by her as a cast member. Ever since I passed the audition and started recording, I have been spending my days pleasantly and happily like a dream. The anime broadcast has come to a conclusion here, but I sincerely hope that I will have the opportunity to voice Lum-chan again…! I will make sure I am in perfect condition for that day! To all of you who have always loved “Urusei Yatsura” and to all of you who have encountered “Urusei Yatsura” for the first time through this anime, again, thank you very much. I believe that “Urusei Yatsura” will be a work that transcends generations and will be read for decades and centuries to come. I would like to continue to love the world of “Urusei Yatsura” with you all for a long, long time! Thank you very much for your continued support!

The series—which first premiered in October 2022—is being directed by Hideya Takahashi (Keijo!!!!!!!!) and Yasuhiro Kimura (2.43: Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Team), with Yuko Kakihara (The aquatope on white sand) on series composition and Naoyuki Asano (Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!) on character designs at David Production (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure).

The Urusei Yatsura manga ran from 1978 to 1987, and was adapted into a 195-episode TV anime that aired in Japan from 1981 to 1986. Ghost in the Shell director Mamoru Oshii helmed the first 106 episodes of the anime and the first two of six films that were produced. The series also had 12 OVAs released after the end of the TV anime.

The new anime is streaming on HIDIVE. VIZ Media publishes the manga in English and describes it:

In a high-stakes game of tag, Ataru must touch Lum’s horns in ten days—or aliens will take over the earth! The fact that Lum can fly doesn’t make Ataru’s job any easier. As it turns out, the game of tag is only the beginning of Ataru’s troubles, as he continues to attract strange encounters with otherworldly beings like beautiful snow spirit Oyuki and the sexy crow goblin Princess Kurama!
