Upcoming Anime with Video Game Roots

You can play these upcoming anime before they premiere!

Can’t wait for the upcoming anime of the winter 2025 season? In a few cases, you don’t have to! Several shows coming up in January started as games. And you can play them right now! From visual novels to mysteries to monster farming, check out this trio of games with anime premiering next month.

TASOKARE HOTEL

Tasokare Hotel

Love a good mystery? Then the upcoming anime TASOKARE HOTEL may just be for you. The series follows Neko, a schoolgirl who finds herself in a strange hotel in the twilight world between life and death. While she tries to remember what happened to her—and figure out if she’s even still alive—she takes a job at the eponymous hotel. There, she and the other staff members help their amnesiac guests remember who they are and how they died.

If that sounds like a mystery you’d like to unravel yourself, good news: you can! TASOKARE HOTEL is based on a mobile game of the same name, and an English translation is now available on iOS and Android. Inspect hotel rooms for clues, solve puzzles, and present your evidence to your patrons. See how many mysteries you can solve before the series premieres on January 8!

Farmagia

Farmagia

Fairy Tail fans will definitely want to give this upcoming anime a look. As you may be able to tell from the art, the upcoming Farmagia features character designs by Hiro Mashima. The series centers on a group of Farmagia (or monster farmers) known as the Dragons of Centvelt. The party, led by Ten and made up of childhood friends from the same orphanage, seeks to free the world of Felicidad from the clutches of Oración Seis.

Farmagia started life as a video game, and an English translation is currently available on Steam. The game is a mix of fantasy combat and farming simulator. Join the action yourself, and look forward to the anime adaptation’s premiere on January 10.

Grisaia: Phantom Trigger

Grisaia: Phantom Trigger

This upcoming anime has its roots deep in video games… more specifically, visual novels. Grisaia: Phantom Trigger currently stands at eight volumes (all available on Steam), and casts the player as the leader of a group of young women involved in extrajudicial (and explosive) missions. But that’s not where the story began. As some fans may know, the world of Grisaia goes back quite a way!

The setting first appeared in the psychological drama visual novel The Fruit of Grisaia, which was also adapted into an anime. Two further installments, The Labyrinth of Grisaia and The Eden of Grisaia, followed directly on from the original story. Phantom Trigger is a brand new take on the franchise in a familiar setting. And you can see it for yourself when it premieres January 1.
