This Summer’s Anime Girls Are the Good Kind of AI

What do AI anime girls dream of, anyway?

In the real world, AI is a controversial topic. In anime… it can also be a controversial topic. In anime girls? Well, in the case of a few this summer, we’re all in favor. Among the human (and humanoid) heroines of the season, these robotic and computerized ladies have been a huge help.

Whether they’re assisting with quality assurance, cooking, or failing to cook, we’ve got a soft spot in our hearts for these artificially intelligent girls. Which ones are your favorites?

Nikola/Tesla

Nikola

Quality Assurance in Another World is the latest game-centric isekai. When beta testers find themselves trapped in this full-dive game, some use their god mode abilities to take this video game world for granted. Others, like Haga, continue their work in hopes of finding a way home. And as he works, he discovers Nikola: an NPC who should have died in an in-game event, but who came back from the “dead.” But that’s not her only surprise: Nikola is two anime girls in one!

Occasionally, this NPC swaps places with an AI entity named Tesla, who wants to see the world of the game set right. While Nikola is sweet and childish, Tesla gives off a much older, less patient vibe. She also eats rocks, which gives Nikola a tummyache later.

Atri

Atri

As an adaptation of a visual novelATRI-My Dear Moments- is full of anime girls. But we’re focusing on the title heroine: Atri, a surprisingly emotive robot. In a future where the ocean levels have risen, Natsuki struggles to continue living on a largely abandoned island. Atri dedicates herself to Natsuki, promising to “be his leg”—as he lost his years ago in an accident.

As advanced as Atri may be, she’s also kind of a mess. Natsuki threatens to sell her on multiple occasions, even. But there’s something surprising about her. You know Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics? Yeah… apparently she can circumvent those. What is Atri? Why was she hidden? And what’s her mission? Gamers already know, but we’ll find out as the series progresses.

Mina

Mina

My Wife Has No Emotion takes place in a world where you can buy advanced robots as household appliances. And, of course, they look like cute anime girls. And one day, Takuma realizes that he’s extremely fond of his Mina. Despite being a low-end model with no facial expressions and only cooking and cleaning functions, he considers her his wife. And, for what it’s worth, she seems okay with this.

The big question throughout this series is: how does Mina feel? At first, it seems she’s following protocol, accepting his affection because it’s accepted of her. But as the series progresses, Mina begins to show preferences and desires. Could there be more to this relationship than meets the eye?
