While there’s no need to waste precious space talking about Ghibli—you all know them very well—Level-5 may be a bit less familiar to those that didn’t spend dozens of hours with the independent developer’s Dragon Quest VIII or, to take it back a little bit, the world-building RPG Dark Cloud. More recently, you may have solved puzzle after puzzle in their DS head-scratcher, Professor Layton and the Curious Village.
The developer recently announced five new titles, coinciding with their tenth anniversary of existence. Outside of a new Professor Layton game, (Professor Layton and The Last Time Travel), the real catch here is Ninokuni: The Another World. Ninokuni is special because it just so happens to be the first time Studio Ghibli has provided original work for a game, and they’ll be teaming up with Level-5 to bring the whimsical RPG to Nintendo DS. The plot involves a spirit inviting a 13-year-old boy into a fantasy land not far separated from our own.
Ghibli will handle the animated sequences, and hopefully the game will see a future port to a console (which is planned, but not specified) that will allow everyone to appreciate their combined efforts on an even larger scale.
