Theatrical OVA Sound! Euphonium -Ensemble Contest- opened in Japan on August 4, and it’s made some amazing strides since. As of September 10, the OVA has earned 420 million yen, which adds up to about US$2.86 million. While that may seem like small beans compared to some of the heavy hitters, the Sound! Euphonium OVA only opened in a limited number of theaters, launching alongside the Blu-ray release at theater shops.
This impressive outing locks in Ensemble Contest as the most successful feature in the series, topping the likes of the other Sound! Euphonium film projects including Liz and the Blue Bird.
Sound! Euphonium: Special Edition ~Ensemble Contest~ is directed by Tatsuya Ishihara and written by Jikki Hanada, with animation production once again handled by Kyoto Animation.
There’s also a third season of the TV anime in the works and set for April 2024. Crunchyroll streams Kyoto Animation’s Sound! Euphonium TV anime and describes it:
Spring in the first year of high school. Kumiko, a member of the brass band in junior high school, visits the high school brass band club with classmates Hazuki and Sapphire. There, she comes across Reina, her former classmate from junior high. Hazuki and Sapphire decide to join the club, but Kumiko can’t make up her mind. She recollects her experience with Reina at a competition in junior high school.
