Smith and Spielberg’s Oldboy Not Quite a Remake

I know even the idea of a remake nowadays will summon the mightiest of groans from pretty much everyone, and there’s definitely some justification for that, but the latest bit of news to come out of the Oldboy remake is pretty interesting. According to Will Smith, they won’t be tackling Chan-wook Park’s acclaimed Korean film, but rather the manga on which it was based. Here’s what Smith had to say about the Steven Spielberg project:

“We’re looking at that right now. Not the film though, it’s the original source material. There’s the original comics of •Oldboy’ that they made the first film from. And that’s what we’re working from, not an adaptation of the film•”

Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi’s Old Boy manga, released in 1997 and gathered in 8 tankobon, is certainly a more fascinating choice for sources to mine than Park’s movie. I mean, I love Oldboy, but it’s a hard act to follow. Whether or not this is the final word on their source material remains to be seen, but we’ll keep you posted if any more information about the project springs up.
